Abacus is the most primitive calculator. Exact origin of Abacus is still unknown. However, it is assumed to be invented by in between 500-300 BC (i.e. 2300 to 2500 years ago).
It is a simple device used for calculating, consisting of a frame with rows of wires along which beads are slid.The first century sources have also given evidence on abacus being used by Indians with a separate column that counted digits with 'shunya' (zero).
Few thousand years ago, when written numbers were not existed, people used fingers to count. Larger quantities were counted through various natural items like pebbles, stones, tying knots and carving.
Merchants who traded goods needed a way to keep count (inventory) of the goods they bought and sold. Various portable counting devices were invented to keep tallies. The abacus is one of many counting devices invented to help count large numbers. When the Hindu-Arabic number system came into use, abaci were adapted to use place-value counting.
